Consider Apathy

"Why should I..." Is always the precursor. Instinct answers without reasoning, but the intellect creeps in after the animal needs are seen to. Fed, sheltered and stabilized, we seek more. We seek purpose. It's not enough simply to eat and survive, we must reach. But why? To what end? Is it the mind of God at play, compelling us to create, or the whims of the ego and a desire to find meaning beyond our mere existence? Regardless, what is the alternative? Apathy. Sweet, blissful uncaring. The void of emotion, and the true opposite of passion. Too noncommittal to be evil, yet too dedicated to avoidance to be considered anything good. The closest we might ever get to neutral, but still... That's not quite right, is it? Because even the most apathetic being is aware of their desire. DESIRE, the enemy of apathy, so bold and reckless and loud. So insistent. We feel the gnawing even when we tell ourselves we've given up. We want even when we've convinced ourselves we couldn't care either way. Apathy, the unobtainable. An intriguing goal to pursue, and likely the most impossible emotional metric to measure. Even those who choose to end their own lives care enough about their suffering to attempt to silence it. We can tell ourselves we don't care about anything, and it may be true to a great extent, but we always care about something. We can't help ourselves. Literally. We are unable to stop caring, and we cannot escape our own desires: not even our desire for total release. Oh apathy, the unwinnable. Just as alluring as it is unobtainable.
