Insomniac Inspiration

Why is it that when I try to sleep, the most fantastic ideas pop into my head? But my brain is so addled from the day, even a quick grab of my phone to jot something down in dark mode isn't enough to properly articulate it.

My ultimate hypocrisy may be how often I preach the importance of rest to others, yet don't very often subscribe to it myself. How cruel it is that my mind demands rest while still churning endlessly: too tired to write effectively, yet too inspired to sleep.

Worse, it all washes away in dreams. When I wake up, I often get the distinct feeling that I've forgotten something I dearly wanted to remember.

But I have discovered a secret. If, instead of engaging in the absurd dichotomy, I refrain from trying to write anything down, I can explore these thoughts further in my mind's eye. Sounds like mystic dribble, I know, but if I close my eyes and allow myself to focus on the thought, the chances of it being with me in the morning are much higher.

Admittedly, this does attribute to the insomnia, because I'm not 'resting' as I should, but it's a compromise I'm willing to make the majority of the time If I can't sacrifice some part of my well being to breath life into my story, then how can I expect it to come to fruition?

(This is terrible advice, please don't sacrifice your sleep for your novel. Learn from my mistakes and be better: don't find inspiration in the insomniac state.)
